Hatchery

First Hatchery

Our first hatchery was established in June 1950 on the bank of the Sturt River below a spring on the property owned by Tom Hosking and rented to SAFFA for £24 per year. The eggs were supplied from our Cox Creek trap site, being stripped and then fertilised by the milt from the male fish that were trapped. The milt was distributed by a feather over the eggs that were placed with water in a tin dish that was coated with black bitumen paint. After fertilisation they were immediately rushed to the hatchery.

The survival rate was extremely low and in 1952 the first brown and rainbow trout fertilised eggs were imported from Tasmania.

Current Hatchery

Brown & rainbow fertilised eggs are now procured from Tasmania, Victoria & New South Wales and lovingly reared over three months at our hatchery in the Adelaide Hills.

The fry are reared & despatched under Government licence to designated water ways in South Australia by SAFFA members.

Certified disease free fry are available to be purchased by the general public.
